0.6/1kV Low Voltage PVC and YJV Armored Power Cable

The 0.6/1kV low voltage PVC and YJV armored power cable is a heavy-duty power distribution cable designed for fixed installation in industrial plants, infrastructure projects, underground networks, and building power systems. Available in two principal insulation types — PVC (VV/VV22) and cross-linked polyethylene (YJV/YJV22) — both rated at 0.6/1kV and protected by a steel wire or steel tape armour layer that provides robust mechanical protection against impact, compression, and rodent damage in direct burial and ducted installations.

The XLPE-insulated YJV variant offers a higher continuous conductor temperature rating of 90°C compared to 70°C for PVC, resulting in a higher current-carrying capacity for the same conductor cross-section — a significant advantage in installations where cable route length, conduit fill, or thermal environment limit heat dissipation. The YJV type is the preferred specification for new industrial and infrastructure projects where long service life and energy efficiency are priorities.

The armoured construction — designated VV22 or YJV22 for steel tape armour, and VV32/YJV32 for steel wire armour — allows direct burial without additional mechanical protection, reducing installation cost and conduit requirements on long underground runs. Steel wire armour (SWA) is specified for vertical installations such as mine shafts and riser cables, where the armour must carry the cable’s own weight over long vertical spans.

Key Features

PVC type (VV / VV22)

  • 70°C continuous conductor temperature
  • Cost-effective for standard power distribution
  • Good flexibility at installation temperatures above 0°C
  • Proven specification for building wiring and short industrial runs
  • Steel tape armour — excellent resistance to crushing and rodents

XLPE type (YJV / YJV22)

  • 90°C continuous conductor temperature — ~25% higher current capacity
  • Better thermal ageing resistance — longer service life
  • Lower dielectric losses — preferred for energy-efficiency projects
  • Performs at –20°C without cracking or stiffening
  • Preferred specification for infrastructure and industrial new-build
  • Steel tape or steel wire armour — direct burial without additional conduit on most soil types
  • 1 to 5 cores, 1.5–400 mm² — covers single-phase, three-phase, and three-phase-with-neutral circuits
  • 3+1 and 4+1 configurations — reduced neutral conductor for cost saving on three-phase loads
  • IEC 60332-1 flame rated — self-extinguishing outer sheath limits fire propagation
  • RoHS compliant — lead-free PVC compounds throughout
  • Custom drum lengths — standard 500 m and 1000 m drums, cut lengths from 10 m available

Common Applications

Underground power distribution

The steel tape armoured VV22 and YJV22 variants are the standard specification for underground LV feeder cables in residential developments, industrial estates, and utility distribution networks. The armour provides mechanical protection during backfilling and against subsequent ground disturbance, while the PVC outer sheath resists soil chemicals and moisture ingress over decades of service.

Industrial power supply

Used as main feeder cables from MV/LV transformers to main distribution boards, and as sub-feeder cables between distribution boards and motor control centres (MCCs) in factories, processing plants, and warehouses. The YJV22 type is strongly preferred for new installations due to its higher current capacity and lower total cost of ownership over a 30+ year service life.

Infrastructure & civil engineering

Specified for power supply to pump stations, water treatment works, tunnels, bridges, and transportation infrastructure where cables must withstand mechanical handling during construction as well as long-term buried service. Steel wire armoured (YJV32) variants are used for vertical shafts, bridge cable hangers, and any installation where tensile strength is required.

Building services

Used in risers, plant rooms, and basement cable routes in commercial and residential high-rise buildings where the armoured construction provides the required protection class without the need for additional mechanical protection conduit.

Other applications

  • Solar PV plant DC and AC feeder cables
  • Wind farm inter-array and export cables
  • Port and shipyard shore power connections
  • Mining surface installation power distribution
  • Agricultural power supply and irrigation pump feeders
