Style 1283 applies a single insulation specification — 60 mils minimum average, 54 mils minimum at any point — across its entire 8–2 AWG range. At the fine end of that range the wall is thick relative to the conductor; at 2 AWG the proportion inverts, and the same 60 mils produces a comparatively lean profile around a large conductor. The practical result is a heavy-current wire with a smaller finished outside diameter than a comparable conductor carrying a scaled-up wall would have.
