Purpose-Built for Refrigerating Equipment
Where most PVC hook-up wire styles carry a general appliance wiring permitted use, UL 1056 is limited to internal wiring of indoor or outdoor refrigerating equipment. That specificity matters in refrigeration system design: the 105°C maximum temperature rating accommodates wire routed near compressor housings, motor leads and hot-gas discharge lines where ambient temperatures routinely exceed the 60°C or 80°C limits of lower-rated PVC styles. The optional 60°C or 80°C oil rating covers wiring exposed to refrigerant oil inside the compressor compartment, a common requirement in hermetic and semi-hermetic compressor assemblies.
Heavy-Wall Single-Grade Insulation
Unlike styles such as UL 1032 whose wall thickness scales across seven conductor-size brackets, UL 1056 specifies a single uniform wall for the entire 20–10 AWG range: 60 mils minimum average, 54 mils minimum at any point. This thicker wall relative to the conductor size provides a more robust dielectric barrier and mechanical protection suited to the vibration and occasional contact with refrigerant fittings encountered in compressor wiring installations. Stranded Conductor Construction
UL 1056 specifies stranded conductor throughout the 20–10 AWG range — solid conductors are not covered by this style. Stranding is the standard choice for wiring subject to vibration from compressor motors, as it resists fatigue cracking that solid conductors can develop under repeated mechanical stress. Conductor sizes 20 through 10 AWG suit the control wiring, fan motor leads and internal power circuits typical in residential and light-commercial refrigerating equipment.
