Three Conductor Construction Options

UL 1283 is the only PVC single-conductor style in this range to list three distinct conductor constructions within the same style description: solid, standard stranded, and braided — the last consisting of 40–20 AWG strands assembled into a rope-lay or bunch-strand configuration. The braided construction delivers substantially greater flexibility than either solid or conventional stranded conductors at the same nominal AWG, which matters in installations where the wire must route through tight radii inside a chassis or withstand repeated movement during equipment servicing. All three constructions share the same 60 mils minimum average / 54 mils minimum at any point PVC insulation wall and the same 105°C / 600 Vac rating.

Heavy-Wall Insulation Across the Full Range

The 60 mils minimum average wall applies uniformly across the entire 8–2 AWG range, unlike styles such as UL 1032 where the wall scales through seven brackets. At 8 AWG, this produces a wall-to-conductor ratio that provides strong dielectric separation and mechanical protection against abrasion from adjacent metal edges inside a panel or enclosure. At 2 AWG, the 60 mil wall maintains the same voltage class with a construction suited to the higher current capacity of that conductor size. How UL 1283 Compares with UL 1056 in the Heavy PVC Range

Both UL 1283 and UL 1056 specify 60 mils minimum average PVC wall and 105°C / 600 Vac, but their permitted uses differ. UL 1056 is limited to internal wiring of indoor or outdoor refrigerating equipment and covers 20–10 AWG stranded only. UL 1283 carries a general internal wiring permitted use, extends to the larger 8–2 AWG conductor range, and offers solid, stranded and braided conductor options.
