Unlike most PVC hook-up wire styles that specify a single insulation compound, UL 1571 covers eight insulation variants within the same style number: extruded PVC, SRPVC (silicone-rubber-modified PVC), foamed PVC, foamed SRPVC, cross-linked PVC (XLPVC), cross-linked SRPVC (XLSRPVC), foamed XLPVC and foamed XLSRPVC. Wall thickness ranges from 2 mils minimum at any point up to 100 mils maximum, giving designers wide latitude to balance flexibility, weight and dielectric strength for a given circuit layout.
