Conductor Options at 24 AWG: Tinned Copper Is Outside the Range

UL 1592 permits solid or stranded conductor across its full 32 AWG to 16 AWG span, but it places a specific limit on tinned copper: tinned copper conductor is recognised only in sizes 26 AWG through 16 AWG, and the tinned copper strands must be a minimum of 15 mils in diameter. A 24 AWG conductor is finer than 26 AWG, which places it outside that permitted window — tinned copper is therefore not available at this gauge under this style.

That is worth catching early, because tinned copper is a common default in fine-gauge specifications and the substitution is not one that can be made quietly at the production stage. Where the design requires tinned copper at 24 AWG, UL 1591 at 150°C recognises tin plated conductor across its whole 32 to 16 AWG range without a size restriction, and is generally the workable alternative if the application will tolerate the lower temperature class. 200°C Without the 600 V Diameter

Most fluoropolymer styles that reach 200°C also carry a 600 Vac rating, and the insulation wall follows the voltage class rather than the conductor. UL 1330, for example, specifies 20 mils at this gauge to support 600 Vac. UL 1592 stays at 300 Vac and specifies 16 mils, which on a 24 AWG conductor produces a meaningfully slimmer finished wire. In a harness where a dozen sensor leads share a channel, that difference accumulates across the bundle. Where the circuit genuinely operates within a 300 V class, the thinner wall is a specification matched to the requirement rather than a reduction in margin.

Within its permitted use — internal wiring — UL 1592 24 AWG suits sensor and thermocouple extension leads, fine signal conductors and low-current control wiring routed through zones reaching 200°C where the circuit operates at 300 Vac or below.
