UL 1659 PTFE Wire — 250°C / 600V Internal Wiring
UL AWM Style 1659 is a PTFE (TFE) insulated single-conductor wire recognised under UL Subject 758 for internal wiring. Rated at 250°C and 600V, it provides a higher thermal margin than standard PVC or general-purpose silicone constructions, making it suited to internal wiring sections where elevated operating temperatures are expected within a protected equipment enclosure.
The PTFE insulation maintains dielectric and mechanical stability across a wide temperature range. Optional constructions include a mica tape wrap and a treated glass braid covering, along with oil-resistant and gasoline-resistant options depending on the specified build. For FEP or PFA insulation at lower temperature ratings, see UL 1332 or UL 10362.

Why Buyers Specify UL 1659
UL 1659 is specified when internal wiring needs to tolerate operating temperatures above the range supported by standard PVC or general-purpose silicone constructions, while remaining inside a protected equipment enclosure. The PTFE insulation maintains dielectric properties across the rated temperature range and is available with optional mica tape wrap or glass braid covering for additional construction requirements.
Typical Applications
- Internal wiring in equipment with elevated operating temperatures
- Internal leads in thermal processing equipment, where protected
- OEM electrical assemblies with hotter internal zones
- Applications requiring 250°C PTFE insulated wire within standard AWG ranges
Selection Notes
If the application requires FEP or PFA insulation at a lower temperature rating, see UL 1332 (200°C FEP) or UL 10362 (250°C PFA, thin-wall). If the thermal requirement exceeds 250°C or the application is a direct hot-zone lead, mica tape and glass braid constructions such as UL 5107 may be more appropriate. UL 1659 is suited to internal wiring requiring PTFE insulation at 250°C / 600V within a protected equipment enclosure.
