UL 3172 Silicone Braid Wire for Saudi Arabia and Dubai
This is the regional procurement page for UL AWM Style 3172 for buyers in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. It is written for appliance and equipment OEM buyers, sourcing teams and distributors whose drawing, BOM or equipment specification calls for Style 3172.
The Style record describes Style 3172 as a single conductor with extruded insulation and a non-extruded covering, rated 200°C and 600 Vac with a Horizontal Flame designation. The insulation is extruded silicone rubber with defined minimum wall requirements, the covering is one or more glass or aramid braid fibrous coverings, the conductor range is 26 AWG–18 AWG in solid or stranded form, and the official Use is “Internal wiring of appliances.”
The ordered wire is confirmed against the customer’s drawing, BOM, appliance internal wiring location, required marking and documentation. This page sets out what the Style fixes, what it leaves open, and what a buyer needs to state for a quotation to be prepared.

Nine points to clarify about the table above:
- The conductor range is 26 AWG–18 AWG. Sizes finer than 26 AWG and heavier than 18 AWG are outside this Style.
- Both conductor forms are available across the range; the Style applies no size-dependent form restriction.
- 30 mil minimum average and 27 mil minimum at any point are two independent requirements, not a range and not nominal values.
- The covering entry permits glass or aramid braid, and permits one or more fibrous coverings. Neither the fibre type nor the number of coverings is fixed by the Style alone.
- The covering requirement is referred in the record to that for Type SF-2 fixture wire, so the detailed covering requirement comes from that reference rather than from a thickness figure published for Style 3172.
- The voltage rating is 600 Vac. The record gives no DC rating.
- The flame designation is Horizontal Flame. No VW-1 or other vertical flame designation appears in the record.
- Conductor material, plating, strand count, strand diameter and lay length are not defined by the Style.
- Finished OD, OD tolerance, conductor resistance, bend radius and ampacity are not defined by the Style.
The Covering: Glass or Aramid, One or More Layers
The covering is where Style 3172 is most often misdescribed. The record permits a braid of glass or aramid fibre, and permits one or more fibrous coverings, so the Style does not establish that every Style 3172 wire carries a single fiberglass braid.
Two practical consequences follow. A buyer whose design depends on a specific fibre type should name glass or aramid in the RFQ rather than assume it, and a buyer replacing an existing wire should confirm the fibre type and the number of coverings on the installed product rather than infer them from the Style number. Where a drawing is silent, the proposed construction is quoted and stated explicitly so the buyer can check it against the design.
The record assigns the covering no performance function. It does not state that the braid provides mechanical protection, abrasion resistance, improved flame behaviour or any dielectric contribution, so none of those is claimed here. The covering is a construction element of the Style, not a performance feature.
Insulation: 30 mil Minimum Average and 27 mil Minimum at Any Point
The insulation is extruded silicone rubber, and the wall must satisfy two conditions together: an average thickness of at least 30 mils, and a thickness of at least 27 mils at every point around the conductor. These are floor values rather than a nominal wall, and the second is not a tolerance on the first.
Minimum wall values do not produce a finished outer diameter. Actual OD depends on the conductor material and form, the actual conductor diameter, the silicone extrusion, the braid construction and the number of coverings, and manufacturing tolerance. Adding a generic AWG conductor diameter to the minimum wall does not give a valid product dimension. Where terminal entry, grommet fit or routing clearance is controlled, state a maximum finished OD and OD tolerance in the RFQ so the proposed construction can be checked against it.

Ratings
The temperature rating is 200°C, stated without a duty or service-duration qualifier. This page does not describe it as continuous or continuous-duty, and derives no service life, thermal cycling count or thermal margin from it.
The voltage rating is 600 Vac. The record gives no DC rating, and the rating describes the wire rather than establishing suitability for any particular circuit. The flame designation is Horizontal Flame; VW-1, FT1, vertical flame, self-extinguishing and fire-resistant descriptions are not applied, and no comparison is drawn here between silicone and other insulation materials at any temperature.
Conductor Range and Form
The Style covers 26 AWG through 18 AWG, solid or stranded. Listings that show a wider span describe sizes the Style does not cover, and an enquiry built on such a listing will not match a qualified Style 3172 construction.
Conductor size carries no circuit function and no current capacity here. The Style designates no size as signal, control or power wire, gives no ampacity, and none is inferred from conductor size, the 200°C rating or the 600 Vac rating. Conductor material and finish are likewise absent from the record: copper, tinned copper, bare copper, nickel-plated copper and silver-plated copper are constructions a buyer may specify rather than properties this page can assert, and strand count, strand diameter, lay construction, stranding classes and flexibility grades are RFQ fields.
Style scope is also not inventory. Not every size, colour or covering configuration is regularly produced or held, and availability is confirmed per enquiry.
Official Use: Internal Wiring of Appliances
The official Use is “Internal wiring of appliances.” This page keeps that boundary as written and does not extend it to building or field wiring, branch-circuit or facility wiring, tray or conduit wiring, external equipment wiring, portable cord or interconnection between separate enclosures.
Buyers sometimes enquire from contexts such as appliance heated sections, oven areas, heater assemblies or other thermal equipment. Those are buyer enquiry contexts and can be reviewed against the drawing, but the official Use for Style 3172 remains internal wiring of appliances, and this page does not present the product as furnace wire, oven wire, heater lead wire or thermal equipment cable. Compliance of a finished appliance is established at the equipment level and is not conferred by the Style designation of one internal wire.
Current-carrying capacity is not fixed by this page. It is evaluated through the buyer’s equipment design and the applicable approval process, and a stated circuit requirement can be passed to engineering review rather than converted into an ampere figure here.

Style Selection Comes from the Drawing
Where a drawing specifies Style 3172, that is the Style quoted. Other silicone AWM Styles carry their own conductor ranges, insulation requirements, covering provisions and Use statements, and this page treats none of them as interchangeable with Style 3172. Style 3172 is not described here as an upgraded version, a higher-voltage counterpart or a substitute for another silicone Style, and a change of Style is a change the buyer’s engineering makes, not a supplier substitution.
How to Specify UL 3172 for a Saudi Arabia or Dubai RFQ
A Style designation is a construction requirement, not a complete purchase specification. A complete Style 3172 enquiry adds the parameters the Style leaves open: the AWG within 26 AWG–18 AWG, solid or stranded, conductor material and plating where the drawing controls them, insulation colour, the required braid covering where glass or aramid is controlled, the marking requirement, the appliance internal wiring location, maximum OD or OD tolerance where controlled, the drawing or BOM, documentation requirements, quantity, packaging preference, the destination and the requested Incoterm.
Saudi Arabia and Dubai Procurement Context
Saudi Arabia and Dubai are the procurement and destination context for this page. Buyers in both markets may search for Style 3172 when a drawing or BOM requires a 200°C, 600 Vac AWM internal appliance wiring construction with a non-extruded braid covering, whether for an equipment build, a replacement part or an export programme. Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Jebel Ali can be named as the destination in an enquiry.
CableApex coordinates international sales, RFQ communication, export documentation review and order confirmation for qualified AWM wire supply. No regional market demand, industry usage or named facility is claimed here, no city or port is described as certified or approved, and no conclusion is drawn about Saudi or UAE conformity, registration or import approval requirements. Where such requirements apply, the buyer should state them so the applicable documents can be reviewed for the ordered construction. Incoterm, packaging, colour and quantity are handled per enquiry rather than published as fixed terms.
What Style 3172 Does and Does Not Define
Style 3172 defines:
- 200°C temperature rating and 600 Vac voltage rating
- Horizontal Flame
- a single conductor with extruded insulation and a non-extruded covering
- conductor range 26 AWG–18 AWG, solid or stranded

- one or more glass or aramid braid fibrous coverings, with the covering requirement referred to that for Type SF-2 fixture wire
- Marking: General
- Use: Internal wiring of appliances.
Style 3172 does not universally define:
- conductor material, plating, strand count, strand diameter or lay length
- the braid fibre type or number of coverings for a given order
- any performance function for the covering
- finished OD, OD tolerance, bend radius, flex cycles or flex class
- conductor resistance, ampacity, current rating or metric cross-section
- a DC voltage rating
- VW-1 or any vertical flame performance
- furnace, oven, heater or thermal equipment suitability as an approved use
- equivalence with or substitution for another silicone AWM Style
- colour, reel length, MOQ, stock, lead time, production capacity or shipping term
Common Procurement Errors
- Assuming the covering is always a single fiberglass braid.
- Attributing mechanical protection or abrasion resistance to the braid covering.
- Extending the range beyond 26 AWG–18 AWG.
- Assuming the conductor is tinned copper, or that all Style 3172 is stranded.
- Omitting the 27 mil minimum-at-any-point requirement.
- Deriving a finished OD from the minimum wall values.
- Writing “200°C continuous”, or adding VW-1 to the flame designation.
- Stating a DC rating, or treating 600 Vac as establishing circuit suitability.
- Deriving ampacity from conductor size or the ratings.
- Presenting the wire as furnace, oven or heater lead wire as an approved use.
- Describing Style 3172 as an upgrade of, or a substitute for, another silicone Style.
- Assuming a fixed document set applies to every Saudi or UAE shipment.
