UL 3271 XLPE Motor Lead Wire — 125°C 600V AC / 750V DC

UL AWM Style 3271 XLPE motor lead wire, rated 125°C, 600 Vac and 750 Vdc, single conductor with extruded XLPE insulation, solid or stranded, across the Style’s full 30 AWG–2000 kcmil conductor range, Horizontal flame, for use as motor leads or internal wiring of appliances. Insulation wall thickness is tiered by conductor size — 30/27 to 65/58 mils depending on the group. Conductor size, material, plating, and optional semi-conductive layer confirmed per order.

UL 3271 Motor Lead Wire

UL AWM Style 3271 is an XLPE-insulated single-conductor wire construction, rated 125°C, 600 Vac and 750 Vdc, with a confirmed Use of motor leads or internal wiring of appliances. This page is built for buyers who have already identified that a motor-lead or motor-component BOM requires UL AWM Style 3271, and who now need to define the exact conductor size, insulation-wall requirement, and construction details to request an accurate quotation. UL Style 3271 covers a conductor range of 30 AWG through 2000 kcmil — this page explains how the Style’s requirements apply across that range, rather than presenting one single AWG as the product.

XLPE Insulation Wall by Conductor Size

UL Style 3271’s minimum XLPE insulation thickness is not a single figure across the Style — it increases in defined brackets as conductor size increases. Specifying the correct wall thickness for your required conductor size is one of the most consequential steps in a UL 3271 RFQ:

Conductor Size GroupMin. Average ThicknessMin. Thickness at Any Point
30–9 AWG30 mils27 mils
8–2 AWG45 mils40 mils
1 AWG – 4/0 AWG55 mils50 mils
213–500 kcmil65 mils58 mils

A buyer requesting a 250 kcmil UL 3271 motor lead is specifying a different insulation-wall requirement than a buyer requesting 8 AWG or 1 AWG — these are not interchangeable constructions, and a quotation for one conductor size cannot be assumed to apply to another. This page does not convert these figures into an invented finished outside diameter; conductor geometry, including finished OD, is order-specific and depends on the actual conductor size and construction ordered.

Motor Leads or Appliance Internal Wiring — The Confirmed Use Boundary

UL Style 3271’s confirmed Use is motor leads or internal wiring of appliances. This page does not extend UL 3271 into general industrial internal wiring, control-cabinet wiring, or panel-side lead work as a separate application category beyond the confirmed motor-lead and appliance-internal-wiring use. Where a motor lead genuinely connects motor terminals within an industrial motor assembly, that falls within the confirmed use; “industrial motors” describes a commercial context in which this Style is specified, not a separate UL certification claim.

Conductor Size Does Not Establish Motor Current, HP, or kW

This page does not publish generic ampacity figures, motor horsepower ratings, or kilowatt ratings tied to specific AWG or kcmil sizes, and does not infer motor current capacity from conductor size or the 600 Vac / 750 Vdc voltage ratings — these are separate parameters determined by motor design. Current-carrying suitability, motor HP, motor kW, and motor insulation class depend on the actual motor design, conductor construction, ambient conditions, and installation, and must be evaluated by the buyer’s engineering process rather than assumed from this page.

Optional Semi-Conductive Layer

UL Style 3271 permits an optional extruded or non-extruded semi-conductive polymeric layer over the conductor. This is an order-specific, optional feature across all conductor sizes within the Style — not a default component of every UL 3271 motor lead. If your motor design requires this layer, state it explicitly in your RFQ.

VFD and PWM Applications: Confirm Separately

UL 3271’s 600 Vac and 750 Vdc figures are the Style’s rated voltage limits — they do not by themselves establish VFD suitability or PWM voltage-spike performance for a variable-frequency-drive-fed motor. If your project involves a VFD-driven motor, confirm your actual circuit voltage, PWM characteristics, and any shielding requirement separately; this page does not make VFD-specific or PWM-specific performance claims beyond the confirmed Style rating.

Conductor Form, Material, Termination and Connectors: RFQ Fields

UL Style 3271 permits solid or stranded conductor construction; conductor material and plating are not established by the Style data across any conductor size. This page does not describe UL 3271 as a fixed bare-copper or tinned-copper product — if your BOM or drawing specifies a conductor material, plating, terminal, connector, or termination process for the motor lead, include that in your RFQ so the corresponding construction can be confirmed.

What UL 3271 Does Not Automatically Define

The Style data does not automatically define: conductor material, conductor plating, strand count, strand diameter, lay length, conductor resistance, ampacity, current rating, motor horsepower, motor kW, motor insulation class, finished OD, bend radius, flexibility class, flex-cycle rating, VFD suitability, PWM suitability, terminal compatibility, connector compatibility, colour, reel length, MOQ, stock availability, or lead time. These remain RFQ, BOM, or ordered-construction parameters where relevant.
