UL 3266 32–10 AWG XLPE Control Panel Wire — 125°C 300V for Internal Component Wiring

UL AWM Style 3266 is a single conductor with extruded insulation, rated 125°C and 300 Vac with Horizontal Flame. The verified conductor range is 32 AWG through 10 AWG, solid or stranded, with extruded XLPE insulation at 15 mils minimum average thickness and 13 mils minimum at any point. The official UL Use is internal wiring. This page covers the construction as internal component wiring inside control panels and control equipment, which is a practical equipment context rather than a field-wiring or building-wiring application. Conductor material, conductor finish, detailed stranding, finished OD, terminals and other assembly-specific details are confirmed for the ordered construction. Qualifying tagged constructions may indicate 600 Volts Peak — For Electronic Use Only, which is separate from the 300 Vac rating.

UL 3266 as Internal Component Wire in Control Equipment

UL AWM Style 3266 is a single conductor with extruded insulation, rated 125°C and 300 Vac with Horizontal Flame, across a 32 AWG through 10 AWG conductor range in solid or stranded form. The insulation is extruded XLPE at 15 mils minimum average thickness and 13 mils minimum at any point.

This page covers that construction as internal component wiring inside control equipment and electrical control devices, where the equipment design specifies Style 3266. The official Use for Style 3266 is internal wiring. Control panels and control devices are the practical equipment contexts selected for this page, not UL wording, and the Style record designates no panel or device category.

Location Inside a Panel Does Not Establish Suitability

This distinction matters more on this page than on most, because a control cabinet contains conductors of more than one kind.

An industrial control panel typically holds internal component wiring inside devices and assemblies, and it also holds conductors installed to field or installation rules — incoming supply conductors, conductors terminating at field terminal blocks, conductors leaving the enclosure. Those are governed by different requirements, and a wire is not appropriate for one category simply because it is physically present in the same cabinet as the other.

Style 3266 is AWM component wire for internal wiring within equipment. This page does not extend it to field-installed control-panel wiring, building wiring, branch circuits, premises wiring, conduit wiring, raceway wiring, tray cable, panel feeder wiring, facility power distribution, general industrial installation wire or external interconnection cable. Nor does it suggest that Style 3266 is automatically appropriate for every conductor found inside any given panel — which conductors fall within the internal-component category is determined by the equipment design and the applicable equipment requirements.

The two insulation figures are separate requirements: 15 mils governs the average across the wall, 13 mils sets a floor at every individual point on it.

The 600 Volts Peak Tag Is Not a 600V Rating

The Style information states that tags may indicate “600 Volts Peak – For Electronic Use Only.” That notation sits with the Use statement rather than with the rating, and it is a different kind of statement from a voltage rating.

The normal Style rating is 300 Vac. Style 3266 is not described here as rated 600V, as “300V / 600V wire”, as 600 Vac, as 600V continuous, or as 600V control panel wire. Every one of those readings turns an optional tag notation into a normal rating, and a panel drawing that specifies a 600V conductor is asking for something the Style’s normal rating does not provide.

The notation also does not apply universally — not every Style 3266 construction carries it. Where a design references the peak notation, two things are confirmed against the ordered construction: whether that construction qualifies for the tag, and whether the application matches “for electronic use only.”

Selecting AWG Across a Wide Range

32 AWG through 10 AWG is a broad span, and the two ends of it behave quite differently in a control assembly.

A fine-gauge construction and a heavier-gauge construction can both sit within Style 3266 while carrying different dimensional requirements, different termination hardware and different handling requirements during panel build. No specific dimensional or termination values are stated here for either end of the range, because the Style record establishes none.

No gauge is selected here on the strength of the Style number. The buyer or equipment engineer selects conductor size based on the electrical design and the applicable equipment requirements. No ampacity figure appears on this page and no allowable current is inferred from AWG alone.

Conductor Material and Form Are RFQ Fields

The verified Style information establishes the 32–10 AWG range and the solid or stranded form. It establishes nothing else about the conductor.

Copper, bare copper, tinned copper, silver-plated copper and nickel-plated copper are none of them established at Style level, and no strand count, individual strand diameter, conductor diameter, lay length, conductor resistance or ampacity is stated here.

Both solid and stranded are permitted, so neither is a default. In control equipment the choice frequently follows the termination hardware — ferrules, spring-clamp terminals and screw terminals each have their own expectations of conductor form — so where the design controls it, state it in the enquiry along with any required conductor material or finish.

Dimensional Confirmation

The 15 mil and 13 mil figures are insulation-wall requirements. They do not define one universal finished outside diameter, and no universal Style 3266 OD is published here or derived from them.

In control equipment, dimensions usually matter because the wire has to fit hardware selected independently of it. Where the drawing controls dimensions, useful fields include:

  • Maximum finished OD
  • Connector cavity constraints
  • Terminal barrel dimensions
  • Wire duct clearance
  • Routing-channel width
  • Bundle clearance
  • Strip length

All of these are customer-controlled or SKU-specific values, treated as confirmation fields rather than published characteristics. No compact profile or dimensional advantage is claimed for Style 3266 as a general property.

Terminations and Panel Assembly

Style 3266 does not determine terminal type, ferrule, crimp terminal, connector, wire seal, strip length, cut length, lug or end preparation. Those come from the panel design and the hardware selected for it.

Where a panel builder or OEM requires processed leads, the requirements have to be specified separately. Cut-to-length service, stripping, terminal crimping, ferrules, connectors and finished harnesses are not presented here as included; each is confirmed for the order.

The related distinction is between bulk Style 3266 wire and a finished control-panel wiring assembly. They are different scopes with different documentation, and an enquiry is easier to answer when it says which is required.

Control Equipment Procurement Requirements

For internal component wiring in control equipment, the requirements that make an enquiry quotable are mostly about the wire’s relationship to everything around it:

  • AWG selected from the permitted Style range
  • Solid or stranded form
  • Drawing-controlled routing
  • Terminal or connector interface
  • Internal duct, channel or clip clearances
  • Wire identification and colour
  • Cut lengths, where applicable
  • Strip lengths
  • Component-to-component connection points

These are procurement considerations, not performance claims. Nothing here states that Style 3266 makes routing easier, fits more compactly, bends in a particular way or lasts longer — the Style record supports none of those, and no numerical value is offered for any of them.

The 125°C Rating and Flame Classification

Style 3266 is rated 125°C, and that rating applies to the wire. It does not establish the permitted internal ambient of the enclosure, the rating of terminals or devices the wire connects to, or the rating of adjacent components. In a populated control cabinet the wire is often not the limiting component.

The Style-level flame designation is Horizontal Flame. VW-1 and FT1 are separate classifications, are not claimed here, and Horizontal Flame is not converted into either. Any separately confirmed vertical-flame requirement is order-specific rather than a universal Style 3266 rating.

What Style 3266 Does Not Define

  • Conductor material and conductor plating
  • Strand count and strand diameter
  • Conductor resistance and ampacity
  • Finished OD and OD tolerance
  • Insulation colour
  • Cut length, terminal, ferrule and connector
  • Packaging, reel length, MOQ, stock and lead time

Each must be confirmed against the ordered construction, the buyer’s drawing or a verified SKU specification.

Substitution and Higher-Voltage Styles

UL 3271 and UL 3321 are separate AWM Styles with their own verified ratings and construction requirements. They are not presented here as automatically better suited whenever a higher voltage is required, and no Style is treated as interchangeable with another on the basis of a single differing parameter.

The same applies to insulation material: silicone, FEP, PFA and other materials are not recommended here as automatically more suitable for any given application, and sharing a material family is not evidence of equivalence between Styles.

A proper comparison considers the required Style, the normal voltage rating, the temperature rating, the AWG, the conductor requirements, the insulation construction, the dimensions, the marking, the termination requirements and the equipment specification. Each alternative requires independent evaluation against that list.

Common RFQ Mismatches

  • “UL3266 control panel wire” requested with no AWG. The Style spans 32–10 AWG.
  • Tinned copper assumed from the Style number. Conductor material is not set at Style level.
  • One OD assumed across all constructions. OD varies with size and ordered construction.
  • “600 Volts Peak” read as 600 Vac continuous. The normal rating is 300 Vac.
  • AWM internal wire terminology applied to field-installed panel conductors. Different categories.
  • Conductor finish left open where the drawing controls it.
  • Terminal or connector requirements not provided. The Style determines none of them.
  • Bulk wire confused with a completed panel harness. Different scopes.
  • Colour, cut length or packaging assumed to be part of the Style. None is defined by it.
