UL 3172 Silicone + Glass/Aramid Braid Wire (200°C, 600V)

UL 3172 is a silicone rubber insulated wire with a glass or aramid braid covering, rated 200°C and 600V AC under UL AWM Style 3172, supplied as a UL Recognized Component — file on record. It is used for the internal wiring of appliances where a 200°C temperature rating is required together with a braided outer covering for added surface protection at routing contact points. It is commonly selected where the operating temperature and routing conditions exceed many PVC or XLPE internal wiring options.

Material Construction

  • Primary Insulation: Extruded silicone rubber, 30 mils minimum average thickness, flexible across its rated range with 600V AC dielectric strength.
  • Outer Covering: One or more glass or aramid braid fibrous coverings (SF-2 type), providing added surface protection for the silicone insulation at routing contact points within protected internal wiring.

UL 3172 vs UL 3135

UL 3172 and UL 3135 share the same 200°C / 600V silicone rubber insulation at 30 mils. The difference is the covering: UL 3172 adds a glass or aramid braid for added surface protection at routing contact points, while UL 3135 is bare silicone rubber without an outer braid, specified for totally enclosed routing where a braided covering is not required.
