UL 3239 High Voltage DC Wire with Nickel-Plated Copper Conductor
UL AWM Style 3239 is a high voltage DC wire construction with extruded or non-extruded insulation, carrying Style ceiling ratings of 200°C and 60,000 Vdc. Among the conductor finishes the Style explicitly permits for copper conductors is nickel plating — and this page is built around that specific procurement variable. Where a BOM or drawing calls for nickel-plated copper in a UL 3239 construction, the surrounding voltage, temperature, insulation, and dimensional requirements still need to be defined before an accurate quotation is possible. This page addresses that specification sequence rather than presenting a generic UL 3239 overview.

Nickel-Plated Copper Is Not the Same as a Nickel Conductor
This distinction is fundamental and is a common source of specification error. UL Style 3239 lists nickel as a conductor material in its own right — 24–10 AWG copper or nickel — and separately permits copper conductors to be tinned, silver plated, nickel plated, heat bonded, or overcoated. These are two different things:
- Nickel conductor: the conductor itself is nickel, a distinct conductor category under the Style.
- Nickel-plated copper: the conductor is copper, with nickel applied as a surface finish. This is the subject of this page.
A BOM line reading “nickel wire” is ambiguous — it may mean either construction, and the two are not interchangeable in either material cost or electrical characteristics. If your drawing intends nickel-plated copper, state it that way explicitly so the correct conductor category and finish are confirmed for the ordered construction.

Style Ceiling Ratings Are Not Automatically Your Construction’s Ratings
UL 3239’s 200°C and 60,000 Vdc figures are the Style’s maximum values, and the Style record explicitly directs that actual temperature and voltage ratings are determined by the specific construction. A qualified UL 3239 construction using nickel-plated copper may carry a lower temperature rating, a lower voltage rating, or both. This page does not state that every nickel-plated copper UL 3239 wire operates at 200°C or 60,000 Vdc. Your required operating voltage and required operating temperature should be stated in the RFQ so the applicable qualified construction can be confirmed.
The 60,000 Vdc figure is a DC rating. This page does not present it as an AC voltage rating, and it should not be treated as equivalent to an AC withstand or working-voltage figure in a design calculation.

UL 3239 Is Not Universally a Silicone-Insulated Style
The Style 3239 insulation is defined as extruded or non-extruded thermoplastic and/or thermosetting, with details determined by the qualified construction. Silicone rubber is a thermosetting material and may appear in a particular qualified UL 3239 construction, but the Style itself does not establish silicone as its universal insulation system. A nickel-plated copper conductor may therefore be combined with a range of qualified insulation systems — the conductor finish and the insulation material are two separate specification decisions, and neither implies the other. If a specific insulation material is required by your design, state it in the RFQ.
Conductor AWG, Form and Strand Construction
Within the copper conductor category, UL Style 3239 covers 24 AWG through 10 AWG, solid or stranded. This page is not built around one featured AWG — nickel-plated copper is available across the permitted copper range, and the required size follows your equipment’s electrical design. Strand construction is likewise not fixed by the Style. If your drawing controls strand count or a specific stranding class, state that requirement so it can be confirmed against the qualified ordered construction.
Optional Covering, Shield and Jacket
UL Style 3239 lists covering, shield, and jacket as three independent optional construction elements, each confirmed per qualified construction. On this page these are secondary RFQ fields rather than the primary subject — a nickel-plated copper construction may be supplied with or without any of them. If your application requires a shielded construction, our UL 3239 High Voltage DC Wire with Optional Shield page addresses that construction decision in detail. Simply state on your RFQ whether each of covering, shield, and jacket is required or not required.
The Confirmed Use Boundary
UL Style 3239’s confirmed Use is internal wiring of TV receivers, or where the acceptability has been determined by Underwriters Laboratories. The second clause matters for procurement: other internal high-voltage applications are not automatically within scope simply because the assembly includes a high-voltage section — acceptability for such applications is subject to determination through the applicable UL evaluation. This page does not present UL 3239 as generally approved for any high-voltage internal assembly, and does not define ignition systems, plasma equipment, or similar applications as UL-defined uses of this Style.
What UL 3239 Does Not Automatically Define
The Style data does not automatically define: nickel plating thickness or plating specification, the specific insulation material for a given construction, actual temperature rating, actual voltage rating, insulation wall thickness, finished OD, conductor resistance, ampacity, current rating, strand count, bend radius, flexibility class, shield material or coverage, covering material, jacket material, terminal compatibility, connector compatibility, standard colour, reel length, cut-length tolerance, MOQ, stock availability, or lead time. These remain drawing, RFQ, or qualified-ordered-construction parameters.
Common RFQ Mistakes
Certain specification errors recur in UL 3239 enquiries and typically require a follow-up before quotation. These are common information gaps, not observations about any particular buyer: specifying UL 3239 without stating the actual required voltage; writing “nickel wire” when nickel-plated copper is intended; assuming UL 3239 always means silicone insulation; assuming every construction carries the full 200°C / 60,000 Vdc ceiling; omitting conductor AWG; omitting the solid or stranded requirement; omitting the insulation specification; omitting finished OD where equipment routing space is controlled; and failing to state whether shield, covering, and jacket are required. Because UL 3239 permits several conductor categories, multiple insulation systems, and three independent optional layers, an incomplete RFQ can easily produce quotations for materially different products.
