UL 3271 30 AWG–2000 kcmil XLPE Appliance Lead Wire — 125°C 600 Vac / 750 Vdc

UL AWM Style 3271 is a single conductor with extruded XLPE insulation, rated 125°C, 600 Vac and 750 Vdc, with Horizontal Flame. The conductor range is 30 AWG through 2000 kcmil, solid or stranded, with size-dependent minimum insulation-wall requirements across six conductor-size groups. An extruded or non-extruded semi-conductive polymeric layer may optionally be provided over the conductor. Marking is General. The official UL Use covers use as Motor Leads or Internal Wiring of appliances; this page focuses on the appliance-internal-wiring branch, while motor leads are addressed separately. Conductor material and finish are not fixed at Style level. Tags may indicate 2500 volt peak — For Electronic Use Only, which is separate from the normal ratings.

UL 3271 for Internal Lead Routing Inside Appliances

UL AWM Style 3271 is a single conductor with extruded XLPE insulation, rated 125°C, 600 Vac and 750 Vdc, with Horizontal Flame. The conductor range runs from 30 AWG through 2000 kcmil, solid or stranded, and an optional semi-conductive polymeric layer may be provided over the conductor.

The official Use for Style 3271 states two branches: for use as Motor Leads or Internal Wiring of appliances. This page addresses the second branch — internal appliance lead routing and component-to-component wiring inside the appliance.

Motor leads are a genuine official Use of this Style, and they are a different sourcing exercise with different drawings, terminations and evaluation criteria. That branch is not developed here, and nothing on this page should be read as covering it.

The minimum wall requirement changes substantially as conductor size increases — from 30 mils minimum average at the fine end to 95 mils at the top of the range. There is no single Style 3271 wall thickness, and a 30 mil figure describes only the first of six groups.

Each group states two separate requirements: the first governs the average across the wall, the second sets a floor at every individual point on it.

A Very Broad Conductor Range

30 AWG to 2000 kcmil is an unusually wide Style-level range, spanning fine internal leads at one end and very large conductors at the other. It is a statement of what the Style permits.

It is not a statement of what is stocked or supplied. Availability of any particular size, construction and production feasibility is confirmed for the requested order rather than assumed from the range, and no inventory, MOQ or lead time is stated on this page.

For appliance internal lead routing, the sizes actually in play are normally at the finer end of the Style, but the conductor size still comes from the appliance electrical design rather than from the Style range.

The Optional Semi-Conductive Layer

Style 3271 permits an optional extruded or non-extruded semi-conductive polymeric layer over the conductor. Two words in that sentence do most of the work: optional, and polymeric.

It is not a metallic shield, not EMI shielding, not a braid shield, not a ground shield, and a construction including it is not a screened cable. It is also not the insulation and not an outer jacket — the Style places it over the conductor, beneath the insulation.

Layer thickness, electrical resistance, shielding effectiveness, material formulation, colour and required applications are not established by the Style record and are not stated here. Not every Style 3271 construction includes the layer. Where a buyer requires it, it is an ordered-construction confirmation item, stated explicitly in the enquiry.

Internal Appliance Lead Routing

The practical contexts on this page are internal: component-to-component leads, fixed internal appliance lead paths, wiring between appliance electrical subassemblies, drawing-controlled internal routing, and connections to internal power or control components where the appliance specification calls for Style 3271.

These are procurement contexts within the official Use branch, not separate approvals. Specifying Style 3271 does not mean UL approves any individual appliance type, and the appliance manufacturer remains responsible for the equipment specification.

The Use also does not extend to generic industrial equipment wiring, factory machinery wiring, building wiring, field wiring, branch circuits, tray wiring, conduit wiring, raceway wiring, facility distribution wiring, portable cord or an external appliance power cord. Not every OEM electrical assembly is an appliance, and the rating on the wire does not make it one.

AC and DC Ratings

Style 3271 carries 600 Vac and 750 Vdc as separate verified ratings, and they are kept separate here. 750 Vdc is not restated as 750 Vac, as “750V AC/DC” or as a generic 600/750V cable designation, and neither figure is reduced to an unqualified “600V” where precision matters.

State whether the lead position operates on AC or DC in the enquiry, since that determines which of the two figures applies.

The 2500 Volt Peak Tag

The Style permits tags indicating “2500 volt peak – For Electronic Use Only.” This is not an ordinary continuous voltage rating and is kept apart from the Style ratings above.

Normal Style rating: 600 Vac / 750 Vdc.
Optional permitted tag: 2500 volt peak – For Electronic Use Only.

The tag is not restated here as 2500V rated, 2500 Vac, 2.5 kV continuous, 2500V appliance wire, “600V / 2500V wire” or 2.5 kV power wire. Not every supplied construction bears it. Where a design references the peak notation, whether the ordered construction qualifies and whether the application matches “for electronic use only” are both confirmed against that construction.

Conductor Requirements

Official Style 3271 information establishes the 30 AWG–2000 kcmil range and the solid or stranded form. It establishes nothing else about the conductor.

Copper, tinned copper, bare copper, silver-plated copper and nickel-plated copper are none of them established at Style level, and no strand count, strand diameter, conductor diameter, lay length, conductor resistance or ampacity is stated here. A specific conductor material or finish can be described only where a verified SKU specification supports it, and such a construction is not generalised to the Style as a whole.

Where the appliance drawing controls conductor material, plating or detailed stranding, each is an RFQ confirmation item.

The 125°C Rating

125°C is the verified Style-level temperature rating and applies to the wire.

It is not stated here as 125°C continuous service for every installed condition, as a guaranteed lifetime at that temperature, or as continuous long-term operation at it. The appliance designer evaluates the actual internal thermal conditions at the lead position against the equipment specification.

Dimensional Control

No universal finished outside diameter is published for Style 3271, and across a range as wide as 30 AWG to 2000 kcmil one figure could not be meaningful. The Style provides minimum insulation-wall requirements, not a finished diameter.

Finished dimensions depend on the conductor size, the solid or stranded construction, the detailed conductor design, whether the optional semi-conductive layer is included, and the ordered construction as a whole.

Where dimensional limits apply, specify the required conductor size, the maximum finished OD, the OD tolerance if controlled, the routing clearance, the terminal interface, the connector interface, and whether the optional semi-conductive layer is required. Style 3271 is not described here as universally compact or thin-wall.

Bulk Wire and a Processed Appliance Lead

Style 3271 defines a single-conductor wire construction. It does not define cut length, strip length, terminal, connector, lug, ferrule, crimp, wire seal, a finished appliance lead or a finished harness.

Bulk wire and a processed lead are different deliverables with different specifications. Where processing is required, those specifications are separately provided and confirmed; cutting, stripping, crimping and termination are not presented here as automatically included.

What Style 3271 Does Not Define

  • Conductor material and conductor plating
  • Strand count, strand diameter and conductor resistance
  • Ampacity
  • Finished OD and OD tolerance
  • Colour
  • Terminal, connector, lug, cut length and strip length
  • Harness geometry
  • Packaging, reel length, MOQ, stock and lead time

Each requires buyer drawings, ordered-construction confirmation, verified SKU documentation or separate commercial confirmation.

Common Procurement Errors

  • “UL3271 electrical equipment wire” requested without establishing which Use branch applies. The Use names motor leads or internal wiring of appliances.
  • Style 3271 treated as general-purpose industrial machinery wire. That is not within the Use.
  • Requested with no conductor size. Six insulation groups sit inside the range.
  • A 30 mil wall assumed for all sizes. It applies to the 30–9 AWG group only.
  • Stranded tinned copper assumed. Conductor material is not set at Style level.
  • Semi-conductive layer assumed to be always included. It is optional.
  • Semi-conductive layer mistaken for metallic shielding. It is a polymeric layer over the conductor.
  • One universal finished OD assumed across 30 AWG–2000 kcmil.
  • 2500 volt peak treated as a normal 2500V continuous rating. The Style rating is 600 Vac / 750 Vdc.
  • Bulk wire confused with a terminated lead.

Substitution

Different AWM Styles have independent temperature ratings, voltage ratings, conductor ranges, construction requirements and official Uses. No Style is presented here as automatically interchangeable with Style 3271, and none is suggested on the basis of insulation-material preference.

Any substitution is evaluated against the actual appliance specification across all of those parameters.

UL Marking and Documentation

Material is supplied as UL-recognized component wire where supplied under qualified manufacturing scope, and UL marking is applied according to the confirmed ordered construction. The Style-level marking designation is General.

CSA AWM, FT1, VW-1 and dual UL / CSA certification are not claimed here; any additional certification depends on the ordered construction. Applicable RoHS / REACH documentation can be confirmed according to the ordered construction.

Flame Classification

The verified Style-level designation is Horizontal Flame. VW-1 and FT1 are separate classifications and are not claimed here; Horizontal Flame is not converted into either. Any separately confirmed vertical-flame requirement remains order-specific.
