This drum heater band is a flat silicone rubber heater sized for containers smaller than a full 200 L drum: 20 L and 30 L pails, 100 L drums and 150 L drums. Five band sizes are offered, from 860 × 200 mm at 800 W up to 1520 × 250 mm at 2,000 W. Each band is built for one supply voltage, normally 220 V or 380 V, with 110 V and 36 V builds available on request. The band’s listed working temperature range is -60 to +200°C, and temperature is controlled either by a knob thermostat mounted on the band, adjustable from 30 to 150°C, or by a separate digital display thermostat.
Smaller containers are where band selection most often goes wrong, because nominal volume says little about diameter. This page sets out each band’s length, the container diameter it closes around, its power and watt density, and the current it draws, so the band can be chosen from a measurement rather than a label.

Band Size by Container
| Container class | Band size | Power | Container diameter it closes around* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 L pail | 860 × 200 mm | 800 W | approx. 290–305 mm |
| 30 L pail or small drum | 900 × 250 mm | 1,200 W | approx. 300–320 mm |
| 100 L drum | 1200 × 250 mm | 1,500 W | approx. 400–415 mm |
| 100 L drum, taller band | 1200 × 300 mm | 1,800 W | approx. 400–415 mm |
| 150 L drum | 1520 × 250 mm | 2,000 W | approx. 500–515 mm |
*Indicative only. Calculated from band length plus a 50–100 mm gap bridged by the closure. Containers of the same nominal volume vary, so check against your measured circumference.
To use the table, wrap a tape measure around the container where the band will sit. The right band is the one whose length is 50–100 mm shorter than that measurement. If the circumference falls outside every range in the table, a custom band length can be built to suit.
Watt Density Across the Range
As the bands get larger, total power rises, but the heat per square centimetre stays nearly constant. A small 20 L pail therefore warms at roughly the same surface intensity as a 150 L drum.
| Band size | Heated area | Watt density* | Current at 220 V* | Current at 380 V* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 860 × 200 mm, 800 W | 1,720 cm² | approx. 0.47 W/cm² | approx. 3.6 A | approx. 2.1 A |
| 900 × 250 mm, 1,200 W | 2,250 cm² | approx. 0.53 W/cm² | approx. 5.5 A | approx. 3.2 A |
| 1200 × 250 mm, 1,500 W | 3,000 cm² | approx. 0.50 W/cm² | approx. 6.8 A | approx. 3.9 A |
| 1200 × 300 mm, 1,800 W | 3,600 cm² | approx. 0.50 W/cm² | approx. 8.2 A | approx. 4.7 A |
| 1520 × 250 mm, 2,000 W | 3,800 cm² | approx. 0.53 W/cm² | approx. 9.1 A | approx. 5.3 A |
*Calculated from band area and rated power, and from power divided by voltage.
The two 100 L options differ only in height. The 300 mm band covers more of the wall and adds 300 W at the same watt density, so it warms a full drum faster. The 250 mm band is the better choice where the clear wall height between ribs or hoops is limited.

Pails, Small Drums and Wall Shape
The smallest containers raise fitting issues that a 200 L drum does not:
- Tapered pails. Many 20 L and 30 L pails are slightly conical so that they stack. A flat band contacts a taper evenly only over a short height, so measure the circumference at mid-band height and check the taper over the band’s 200–250 mm.
- Stiffening ribs. Pails and small drums often have moulded or rolled ribs. Place the band on a plain section of wall, or choose the shorter band height.
- Handles and spouts. Pail handle lugs and side spouts interrupt the wall, so position the band below them.
- Plastic containers. Plastic conducts heat poorly and has its own temperature limit. Keep the thermostat setting well below the container’s maximum service temperature, and confirm that limit with the container supplier.
Voltage and Low-Voltage Builds
Each band is built for one supply. At 220 V and 380 V, every size in the range draws under 10 A. At 110 V, the currents double, from roughly 7 A for the 800 W band to roughly 18 A for the 2,000 W band, so check the circuit and plug for the larger sizes. 36 V builds suit portable or wet-area setups supplied from a safety transformer, but at the standard wattages they draw over 20 A. Low-voltage bands are therefore normally built at a reduced wattage, confirmed per order, together with lead and connector sizing.

What This Heater Specification Covers
The specification defines each band’s dimensions, rated power at a stated voltage, working temperature range, control options and closure. It does not cover warming times, which depend on the contents, the fill level, the starting temperature and whether the container is insulated. Nor does it cover suitability for flammable contents or classified hazardous areas. Confirm application suitability, including any hazardous-area requirements at your site, before specifying a band for flammable or combustible products.
Common Procurement Errors
- Selecting by litre rating. A 100 L drum from one maker can be 40 mm wider than one from another. Select by measured circumference.
- Measuring a tapered pail at the rim. The rim is the widest point. Measure at the height where the band will sit.
- Choosing the taller band without checking clear height. A 300 mm band that bridges a rib loses contact and heats unevenly.
- Ordering 36 V at standard wattage. The current is too high for practical leads and connectors. Agree a reduced wattage instead.
- Leaving the control unstated. Knob and digital thermostat versions are different builds and should be specified at order.
